7.6 Systems of Linear Differential Equations: Class Notes

7.6

Example

Use the Laplace transform to solve the given system of differential equations.

(1)dxdt=2y+et(2)dydt=8x−t,x(0)=1,y(0)=1

Solution

Transform both equations, substituting x(0)=1 and y(0)=1:

ℒ{(1)}:sX(s)−x(0)=2Y(s)+1s−1

ℒ{(2)}:sY(s)−y(0)=8X(s)−1s2

Solve ℒ{(1)} for Y(s) and substitute into ℒ{(2)}.

12(sX(s)−1−1s−1)=Y(s)

Combine the constants: −1−1s−1=−s+1−1s−1=−ss−1, so

Y(s)=12(sX(s)−ss−1)

Substitute this into ℒ{(2)}, which is sY(s)−1=8X(s)−1s2:

12(s2X(s)−s2s−1)−1=8X(s)−1s2

Multiply by 2 and collect the X(s) terms on the left:

(s2−16)X(s)=s2s−1+2−2s2(s2−16)X(s)=s4+2s2(s−1)−2(s−1)s2(s−1)X(s)=s4+2s3−2s2−2s+2s2(s−1)(s+4)(s−4)

Partial fractions:

s4+2s3−2s2−2s+2s2(s−1)(s+4)(s−4)=As+Bs2+Cs−1+Ds+4+Es−4

s4+2s3−2s2−2s+2=As(s−1)(s2−16)+B(s−1)(s2−16)+Cs2(s2−16)+Ds2(s−1)(s−4)+Es2(s−1)(s+4)

Substitute the roots of the denominator, and compare the s4 coefficients:

s=0: 2=16B ⇒ B=18s=1: 1=−15C ⇒ C=−115s=4: 346=384E ⇒ E=173192s=−4: 106=640D ⇒ D=53320s4: 1=A+C+D+E ⇒ A=1+115−173192−53320=0

X(s)=1/8s2−1/15s−1+53/320s+4+173/192s−4

Answer: x(t)=18t−115et+173192e4t+53320e−4t

Rather than transforming back again, solve (1) for y and use x(t):

y(t)=12x′(t)−12et

Answer: y(t)=116−815et+17396e4t−53160e−4t

(1)d2xdt2+dxdt+dydt=0(2)d2ydt2+dydt−4dxdt=0

x(0)=1,x′(0)=0,y(0)=−1,y′(0)=5

Solution

Transform both equations. The terms that come from x(0)=1, y(0)=−1, and y′(0)=5 are highlighted to match: x(0)=1 gives −s and −1 in the first equation and +4 in the second; y(0)=−1 gives +1 in the first and +s and +1 in the second; y′(0)=5 gives −5 in the second.

ℒ{(1)}:s2X(s)−s+sX(s)−1+sY(s)+1=0

ℒ{(2)}:s2Y(s)+s−5+sY(s)+1−4sX(s)+4=0

In ℒ{(1)} the constants −1+1 cancel, and in ℒ{(2)} the constants −5+1+4 cancel. Then divide each equation by s:

(s2+s)X(s)+sY(s)=s ⇒ (s+1)X(s)+Y(s)=1

(s2+s)Y(s)−4sX(s)=−s ⇒ (s+1)Y(s)−4X(s)=−1

Elimination: eliminate Y(s). Multiply the first equation by s+1, rewrite the second as 4X(s)−(s+1)Y(s)=1, and add, so the Y(s) terms cancel:

(s+1)2X(s)+(s+1)Y(s)=s+14X(s)−(s+1)Y(s)=1

Adding:

[(s+1)2+4]X(s)=s+2

X(s)=s+2(s+1)2+4

Write the numerator in terms of s+1 to match the denominator, and give the second piece the constant k=2 it needs for a sine transform:

X(s)=s+1(s+1)2+4+12·1·2(s+1)2+4

x(t)=e−tcos⁡2t+12e−tsin⁡2t

The first transformed equation gives Y(s)=1−(s+1)X(s). Substitute X(s):

Y(s)=1−(s+1)(s+2)(s+1)2+4

Y(s)=s2+2s+5−s2−3s−2(s+1)2+4=−s+3(s+1)2+4

Again write the numerator in terms of s+1: −s+3=−(s+1)+4, and 4=2·2 supplies k=2:

Y(s)=−s+1(s+1)2+4+2·2(s+1)2+4

Answer: x(t)=e−tcos⁡2t+12e−tsin⁡2ty(t)=−e−tcos⁡2t+2e−tsin⁡2t
