4.3 Homogeneous Linear Equations with Constant Coefficients: Class Notes

4.3a

Consider the differential equation y″−5y′+6y=0.

Tip: Why try an exponential? Functions such as x3, ln⁡x, tan⁡x, and x change form when differentiated, so the terms of the equation can't cancel. Every derivative of emx is a multiple of emx.

Start with y=emx. Then y′=memx and y″=m2emx. Substitute:

m2emx−5memx+6emx=0(m2−5m+6)emx=0.

Since emx≠0,

m2−5m+6=0(auxiliary equation)

(m−2)(m−3)=0m=2, 3

So y1=e2x and y2=e3x are solutions, and the general solution is

Answer: y=c1e2x+c2e3x

Definition

The auxiliary equation of the second-order linear differential equation ay″+by′+cy=0 is am2+bm+c=0.

The auxiliary equation has solutions

m=−b±b2−4ac2a.

This leads to 3 cases.

Case 1: m1≠m2, both real. Then

y=c1em1x+c2em2x

Case 2: m1=m2, real (repeated roots). If b2−4ac=0, then m1=−b2a and

y1=e−b2ax.

Find y2 by reduction of order, y2=y1∫e−∫Pdxy12dx. In standard form,

ay″+by′+cy=0 ⇒ y″+bay′+cay=0,

so e−∫Pdx=e−bax, which is the same as y12=e−bax:

y2=y1∫e−baxe−baxdx=xy1.

Then

y=c1em1x+c2xem1x

Case 3: b2−4ac<0, so m1=α+βi, m2=α−βi. Then, for all c1,c2,

y=c1e(α+βi)x+c2e(α−βi)xy=eαx(c1eβix+c2e−βix).

To rewrite this with real functions, use Euler's formula:

eiθ=cos⁡θ+isin⁡θ

Tip: Side note: if θ=π, then eiπ=−1, so eiπ+1=0.

eβix=cos⁡βx+isin⁡βxe−βix=cos⁡βx−isin⁡βx

Adding the two lines gives eβix+e−βix=2cos⁡βx, so

cos⁡βx=eβix+e−βix2.

Likewise,

sin⁡βx=eβix−e−βix2i.

Strategic choices for c1,c2 above (for example, c1=c2=12 gives eαxcos⁡βx) give the following general solution. If m=α±βi, then

y=eαx(c1cos⁡βx+c2sin⁡βx)

4.3b

Example

Find the general solution of the given second-order differential equation.

y″−10y′+25y=0

Solution

m2−10m+25=0(m−5)2=0 ⇒ m=5 (repeated)

Repeated root (Case 2):

Answer: y=c1e5x+c2xe5x

Example

2y″−3y′+4y=0

Solution

Auxiliary equation 2m2−3m+4=0. By the quadratic formula,

m=3±9−324m=34±234i.

Complex roots (Case 3) with α=34 and β=234:

Answer: y=e3x/4(c1cos⁡234x+c2sin⁡234x)

Example

Find the general solution of the given higher-order differential equation.

d3xdt3−d2xdt2−4x=0

Solution

We're looking for x(t). The auxiliary equation is

m3−m2−4=0.

Its roots (found with wolframalpha.com) are

m=2,m=−12±72i.

Tip: To check by hand: m=2 works because 8−4−4=0, and dividing by m−2 leaves m2+m+2, whose roots are −12±72i.

The real root gives e2t, and the complex pair gives the Case 3 form:

Answer: x(t)=c1e2t+e−t/2(c2cos⁡72t+c3sin⁡72t)

Special 2nd-order differential equations

y″+k2y=0 and y″−k2y=0, k∈ℝ

First equation: m2+k2=0, so m=±ki (Case 3 with α=0):

y=c1cos⁡kx+c2sin⁡kx

Second equation: m2−k2=0, so m=±k:

y=c1ekx+c2e−kx

Recall

cosh⁡x=ex+e−x2,  sinh⁡x=ex−e−x2

If c1=c2=12, then y1=cosh⁡kx. If c1=12, c2=−12, then y2=sinh⁡kx. Alternatively,

y=c1cosh⁡kx+c2sinh⁡kx

4.3c

Example

Find a homogeneous linear differential equation with constant coefficients whose general solution is given.

y=c1e−4x+c2e−3x

Solution

The exponents tell us the roots of the auxiliary equation:

m=−4, −3⇒ (m+4)(m+3)=0⇒ m2+7m+12=0

Answer: y″+7y′+12y=0

Example

y=c1e10x+c2xe10x

Solution

The factor x signals a repeated root: m=10 (repeated).

(m−10)2=0m2−20m+100=0

Answer: y″−20y′+100y=0

Example

y=c1+c2e2xcos⁡5x+c3e2xsin⁡5x

Solution

Three arbitrary constants, so this is a 3rd-order DE. The constant term is y1=e0x, so m=0; the other two terms give m=2±5i.

m(m−(2+5i))(m−(2−5i))=0m(m−2−5i)(m−2+5i)=0

Use the difference of squares (A−B)(A+B)=A2−B2 with A=m−2 and B=5i:

m((m−2)2−(5i)2)=0m(m2−4m+4+25)=0m3−4m2+29m=0

Answer: y‴−4y″+29y′=0
